Erba Mannheim EC 90: 3D Animation for Electrolyte Analysis
Project Overview
For Erba Mannheim, a global player in clinical diagnostics, we developed a comprehensive 3D visualization suite for the EC 90 Electrolyte Analyzer - a compact benchtop system built around a proprietary biosensor cartridge for maintenance-free electrolyte testing in clinical laboratories. Erba Mannheim's positioning for the EC 90 is built around a single idea: "Magic is in the biosensor." Our task was to make that magic visible. The goal was to communicate what makes the EC 90 genuinely different: a biosensor design that eliminates the maintenance burden of traditional electrolyte analyzers while delivering reliable measurement of sodium, potassium, chloride, and other critical electrolytes. Standard photography could show the exterior. Only 3D animation could show why the biosensor changes everything.
The Challenge
Electrolyte analyzers are a mature product category. The EC 90 competes in a market where laboratory professionals have seen many instruments and are skeptical of marketing claims. The animation needed to do more than look impressive - it needed to make the biosensor technology tangible and credible. The key challenge was visualizing the internal fluidic system and the biosensor cartridge in a way that makes the maintenance-free operation self-evident. If the viewer understands how the biosensor works, they understand the value proposition. If they do not, the product looks like any other compact analyzer.
Our Solution
We built a complete digital twin of the EC 90 and structured the animation around the biosensor as the central narrative. The plug-and-play cartridge replacement sequence is shown in detail, with cutaway views that expose the internal fluidic architecture and the electrode configuration inside the biosensor. The visual approach combined clean exterior presentation with progressive internal reveal - establishing the compact form of the device first, then demonstrating the operational logic that makes it practical for high-throughput clinical use. Lighting and materials were calibrated to reflect a modern clinical laboratory environment. The result is a visual story where the product's key advantage - the biosensor that simplifies maintenance without compromising analytical performance - is immediately clear.
Impact & Results
The 3D animation provided Erba Mannheim with a complete visual toolkit for the international EC 90 launch. It supports digital campaigns, distributor presentations, and trade fair exhibitions across Erba Mannheim's global markets, serving as the primary asset for explaining a product whose competitive advantage lives inside the biosensor cartridge.
What This Project Required
Animating the EC 90 required understanding ion-selective electrode technology, the fluidic logic of biosensor-based analyzers, and the practical workflow considerations that matter to clinical laboratory staff. Electrolyte analysis is a high-frequency, high-stakes application - results directly inform decisions about patient fluid and electrolyte balance. The animation needed to reflect that clinical seriousness. Getting the biosensor mechanics right, and showing the electrode configuration accurately, required close work with Erba Mannheim's technical documentation. In a category where laboratory professionals know the technology well, credibility depends on precision.
