Revvity Auto-Pure 2400: On-Location Case Study at a UK TB Reference Laboratory

Project Overview

REBUS Agency produced an on-location case study video for Revvity at Oxford Diagnostic Laboratories, the UK national reference laboratory for tuberculosis infection testing. The film documents the Auto-Pure 2400 in genuine daily use, in a laboratory that processes more than 400 samples per day for hospitals, clinics and public health programmes across the country. This is a fully live-action production, distinct from our earlier 3D product animation of the same instrument. Where the animation explains how the technology works, this video shows what it changes for the people who use it.

The Challenge

Technical specifications describe what an instrument does. They do not show what it means for a laboratory running at volume, under accreditation, with a fixed number of technicians and a rising sample load. Revvity needed that second story told credibly, and a national reference laboratory was the right place to tell it. A working diagnostic laboratory is also one of the more demanding environments a film crew can enter. Access is restricted, workflows cannot be paused for the convenience of a camera, and anything that appears on screen has to be technically correct, because the audience is made up of specialists who will notice immediately if it is not. Timing added a further constraint. Between the client confirming the shoot and the first day of filming, roughly three weeks passed. Scheduling, preparation and crew logistics for an international shoot all had to fit inside that window.

Our Solution

A four-person REBUS crew travelled to the UK with a complete production package and filmed on site across two full days. We shot in the offices and directly inside the laboratories, covering the environment from both perspectives: the management view of how automation changed operational planning, and the bench view of how it changed a technician's morning. The production combined the laboratory manager's account of throughput, accreditation and capacity with the everyday reality described by the technician operating the system, who previously spent hours on repetitive pipetting and sample preparation and now spends around twenty minutes each morning preparing and loading the Auto-Pure 2400 deck. Everything was shot on professional camera and lighting equipment and finished with professional colour grading, which matters more in a laboratory than in most environments. Laboratory interiors are lit for work rather than for cameras, and consistent grading is what keeps a technically accurate space looking like somewhere you would want to work. Our team understands IVD workflows before arriving on site. That is the difference between filming an instrument and filming what an instrument does, and it is why preparation for a shoot like this can be measured in weeks rather than months.

Impact & Results

The outcomes below are those reported on camera by the team at Oxford Diagnostic Laboratories. They describe the performance of the instrument in their laboratory, not the performance of the video. The laboratory reports more than 15,000 samples processed on the Auto-Pure 2400 platform to date. Six Auto-Pure 2400 units are in operation, which the laboratory manager describes as sufficient to automate the majority of samples within a standard eight-hour shift. According to the laboratory, integrating the Cellaca into the workflow reduced cell counting time by approximately 82%. The team states it has maintained an indeterminate rate consistently below 2%, alongside UKAS accreditation held for more than 15 years. The laboratory says growth in sample volume has been absorbed without adding staff at the same pace. What REBUS delivered is the film that makes those results visible and credible to an external audience. The client is satisfied with the result. For us, the project confirmed something central to on-location work in diagnostics: the credibility of a case study depends on filming in the real environment, with the real people, and on being able to move quickly enough that the opportunity does not pass.
